I have had the privilege to experience working with students and systems representative of elementary, middle, and high school. I after some time, I realized what I was doing as far as grading is concerned, was not working for students. I began to ask myself questions like: What’s the point of grades? What do grades mean? How did you learn how and what to grade? Why do we grade the way we do? This led me to read, and re-read the book by Joe Feldman Grading for Equity (2018). Sure enough, during the 2022-2023 school year, inequitable grading systems and practices had not been resolved at my site. My change project sought to initiate the first phase of moving away from harmful deeply rooted grading practices that were not promoting student success or achievement.
